Alex Callinicos has been a leading Marxist theorist and critic since the 1970s. His early writings focused on interpreting the thought of French philosopher Louis Althusser, which he followed up with a series of innovative examinations of key themes in Marxist theory. More recently, he has combined extensive work on critical and social theory and its relation to contemporary Marxism with an emphasis on the political economy of contemporary global capitalism. He has combined his academic role as Professor of European Studies at King’s College London with a continuing strand of political writing and activism, particularly in the movement for ‘another globalization’ and within the Socialist Workers Party. His many works for Polity include Equality: Themes for the 21st Century, An Anti-Capitalist Manifesto, The Resources of Critique, Social Theory: A Historical Introduction and Bonfire of Illusions: The Twin Crises of the Liberal World.
