Helga Nowotny

Helga Notowny is a world-leading sociologist whose writings and work on the nature and practice of scientific and technological research have had a profound impact on the way we conceive the relationship between public policy, society and science. Currently Professor Emerita of Social Studies of Science at ETH Zurich, between 2010 and 2013 she was the president of the European Research Council, one of the world's leading focal points for scientific research funding, which she played an important role in creating. Her work has focussed on the nature of risk, uncertainty and time, and she has combined her scholarly endeavours with an active career in a wide-range of internationally important research bodies and European scientific organizations. She has published a number of books with Polity, including Rethinking Science, Time: The Modern and Postmodern Experience and The Cunning of Uncertainty.
