Judith Butler is one of the world's leading gender theorists, whose book Gender Trouble has been hugely influential, particularly in feminist and queer studies. Her most notable contributions to the field include the concept of gender performativity and the social construction of gender and sex. Butler is also a prominent voice in contemporary political theory and her recent Polity book with Athena Athenasiou, Dispossession, interrogates 'the performative in the political'. She is Maxine Elliot Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature and the Program of Critical Theory at the University of California, Berkeley. She is also the Hannah Arendt Chair at the European Graduate School.
