Mary Kaldor

Mary Kaldor is among the world’s leading experts on international relations, security and the nature of contemporary war. Professor of Global Governance and Director of the Civil Society and Human Security Research Unit at the LSE, in her work she has sought to illustrate the changing dynamics of governance in the context of globalization, and the new opportunities for human emancipation afforded by a cosmopolitan outlook and the increasingly global nature of civil society. She has gained perhaps most attention for her theory of ‘new wars’, outlined in her seminal Polity book New and Old Wars, which argues that ‘old wars’ – violent territorial contests between sovereign states – have been largely replaced by a new type of conflict, local mixtures of war, terror and organized crime fought for particularistic political goals. Her other books with Polity include Human Security and Global Civil Society.
