Penelope Leach

Penelope Leach is one of the world’s best-known child psychologists, whose work has had a huge impact on popular attitudes to child-rearing and development. She has held numerous leading research positions in the field, and is currently Senior Research Fellow of the Institute for the Study of Children, Families and Social Issues, Birkbeck, University of London, and of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust. She is most famous for her 1977 work Your Baby and Child, which provided pioneering insights into child development and parenting for a popular audience, selling over 2 million copies worldwide. Known for her ability to communicate complex academic work on child psychology to a wide audience, in her more recent work she has focused on the wider social and political implications of looking after children, issues she examines in her Polity book Child Care Today.
