Robert Legvold

Robert Legvold is a political scientist who is renowned as a leading authority on Soviet and Russian foreign policy. Marshall D. Shulman Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Science at Columbia University, he previously held various posts for many years at Tufts University, where his early work focused on Soviet foreign policy, and in particular the USSR’s approach towards Africa. In recent years he has specialized in the impact of the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the foreign relations and international policies of Russia, the Ukraine and other ex-Soviet states, and US relations with the post-Soviet states. Recently he has gained widespread attention with his argument that US–Russian relations have deteriorated to a qualitatively new and serious phase, triggered by the Ukrainian crisis, which represents a definitive turn towards a new Cold War, a viewpoint eloquently expounded in his Polity book Return to Cold War.
