Serge Gruzinski is a distinguished and prolific French historian, specializing in Hispanic-American cultures, empire and China in the Early Modern period. Director of Research at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and Director of Studies at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris, his work has transformed our understanding of the European colonization of the Americas. His emphasis on the way that physical colonization was also a colonization of the mind has been enormously influential on the historiography of imperialism. A tireless scholar of enormous erudition, his more recent writings have moved on to examine the early history of globalization and China.
