David Held

Posted By Politybooks

David Held’s work on democracy, globalization and cosmopolitanism marked him out as one of the most gifted and influential political theorists of his generation. He held positions at the Open University and the LSE before taking up post as Master of University College, Durham, and Professor of Politics and International Relations at Durham University. His central project was to analyse and theorize the changing nature of governance and democracy in light of globalization and the increasing interconnectedness of the modern world. He questioned the assumption that the nation-state is the sole locus of legitimacy and accountability, arguing that the challenges of modernity require new and innovative forms of multilevel, transnational governance that embody democratic and cosmopolitan values. His many Polity books include Models of Democracy, Global Transformations, Global Covenant, Cosmopolitanism: Ideals and Realities and Gridlock (with Thomas Hale and Kevin Young).
